We wanted to go pick some fresh vegetables since long time. On one fine Saturday we started from home at 3:30 PM and reached there at around 4:00 PM. It is a big farm at the base of a small hill. A lady took us in the farm and showed us all the vegetables and gave a carry-bags and tools to pluck the veggies. There were cabbage, cauliflower, beans, okra, tomatoes, and lot many other veggies. We picked whatever we wanted and billed. Surprisingly we took a lot but the bill was just $4. If it would have been walmart or Hy-Vee it could have been anything like $20.
Make sure that you warn your kids (regardless of how much you love your kids) to behave properly in the farm. The people over there are very disciplined and do not tolerate any misbehavior like plucking flowers, running in the fields or pulling tails of their cats etc. Especially if you are from India, the people over there behave somewhat rudely with you (or at least you perceive that they are rude). But they are NOT rude. They are just trying to maintain their farm and fields. They have had some bad experiences with kids from India (where kids plucked unripened beans/vegetables and parents did not even bother about it.).
So go there and keep eye on your kids as well while you are picking the vegetables. Those are really fresh and a lot lot cheaper than Walmart or HyVee.
